A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan County in China's Sichuan Province on 12 May 2008, causing great losses to the people in the county and its surrounding areas. JCDecaux, one of the world's leading outdoor advertising companies, has decided to donate RMB780,000 (including the donations from employees) through its partner Red Cross Society of China to the people in the earthquake-hit areas. The donation is expected to be used for purchasing supplies which are in urgent need and in short supply in the disaster areas, including food and drugs. With the influence of its outdoor advertising platform across China, JCDecaux China will also place a large number of charity advertisements on its outdoor advertising network in cooperation with Red Cross Society of China to call for enterprises and warm-hearted people to pay attention to the disaster more actively and give victims of the earthquake a hand. Mr. Stephen Wong, CEO for JCDecaux Greater China said, "We are astonished by the massive, destructive earthquake in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, which has brought huge losses to people's lives and properties. Facing the precipitate disaster, we will give our full support to the disaster relief and reconstruction efforts in the quake-hit areas." "We hope to assume our corporate social responsibility by doing our part. We will take a series of assistance measures such as donating money and calling on more enterprises and people to join the efforts, to help disaster-stricken fellowmen, save more valuable lives and contribute to the post-earthquake reconstruction work," added Stephen. It is said that JCDecaux established an emergency response group, led by Stephen Wong and Brian Kam, executive chairman of JCDecaux China, soon after the earthquake happened, in a move to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situations of its subsidiaries in the disaster-stricken areas and the living conditions of its partners, employees and their family members there. On the other hand, the company quickly called on all of its subsidiaries to make donations, whiling publishing charity ads by dint of outdoor advertising platforms across major cities of China, including its more than 2,000 outdoor media assets such as bus media in eleven cities, metro media in six cities, campus media in seven cities as well as airport media in Shanghai and Beijing. In addition, JCDecaux has donated to the earthquake-hit areas through its partner, the Red Cross Society of China, in an effort to assist these areas in saving more people and rebuilding the damaged homes.
