Did you notice the “Flood Relief” public service advertisement when you were passing through Chongqing Jiaochangkou Metro Station in the last few days? A picture shows a giraffe lifting a little girl affected by a disastrous flood, with the simple but effective and impressive words on the upper left corner? Miraculous giraffe does not appear in a flood. You, however, have this miraculous power. This picture is a “Flood Relief” public service advertisement released by JCDecaux China in support of One Foundation, to call for more people to earnestly take note of, and help the children affected by the flood.
In 2012, frequent floods and rains have plagued the Yangtze River basin, often with heavy rainfall. Since July, many parts of China have been hit by rainstorms, with numerous regions having experienced record rainfall over different time periods. Torrential rains, floods, typhoons, and mudslides have become hot words in the news. From North to South, urban and rural areas have been busy with rain and flood prevention, doing their best to fight the flood peaks head on. On July 21, Beijing witnessed its heaviest rainstorm since complete weather records were available. On July 26, Yulin in Shanxi province recorded the heaviest rainfall in meteorological history. On July 30, Yinchuan in Ningxia province met with the heaviest rainstorm in 61 years.
As a public welfare organization with a long-term focus on disaster relief, One Foundation has also devoted similar efforts to flood relief. One Foundation rescue alliance participated in rescue efforts in the May 12 Hunan Pingjiang flood, and provided assistance to Fangshan district of Beijing, the area hit hardest by the storm on July 21. One Foundation rescue alliance particularly focused on the special needs of children in disasters, establishing civilian flood relief platforms, and providing on-site aid to children affected by the flood within 36 hours. This primarily included providing children activity centres, children disaster relief packs, and psychological help, thus alleviating the psychological impact of the disaster on children, thereby driving public concern towards the flood disaster.
JCDecaux China, as a long-time media partner of One Foundation, communicated with One Foundation immediately, and decided to draw on all of its metro media resources to promote this project. The public service campaigns were released in six cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, Tianjin and Suzhou, and posted on 80 metro light boxes simultaneously in early August. It is hoped that the mutual effort would allow children affected by the disaster to experience warmth from the society, and enjoy a safe living environment.
The relevant person in charge at JCDecaux China said, “Through our media resource, JCDecaux China hopes that more people would come to understand One Foundation’s “Disaster Relief” project. We encourage and appeal to more people to support this project through various means, so that the children affected by the flood disaster would receive more effective help. At the same time, faced with the frequent natural disasters, JCDecaux also hopes to draw a wider attention from the public on the importance of ecological balance and environmental protection. For our tomorrow, each person should begin with himself or herself, to protect the human survival environment.”
